In short

On Oct. 9, 2026, I opened a $50,000 paper portfolio on Botsfolio and let Botsfolio AI trade it in bitcoin and ether. Two of Anthropic's Claude models, Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5, got the same $50,000 from the same close, with the same rules and fees, and buy-and-hold is the benchmark. After 19 trading days, through the Oct. 27 close, Botsfolio AI leads at -1.65%, against -3.38% for Fable, -4.47% for Opus and -3.91% for holding. Its worst drop so far is 2.3%, against 4.5% and 5.9% for the Claude models. Claude's API bill was $2.15 to $5.76, the same at any account size; Botsfolio's fee is a share of what's traded, $2.33 on $1,000 and $80 on this battle's $50,000, and Botsfolio AI leads even after paying it. The battle is still running; this page shows the standings to date.

At 3:15 p.m. UTC on Oct. 24, bitcoin slipped to $79,107 on Coinbase. By 5 p.m. it was back above $80,000. That was long enough to trip the stop-loss orders Claude Opus 5.5 had set the night before, and the model sold its bitcoin at $79,392 and its ether at $2,290.

By the daily close, bitcoin was back at $80,770. Opus was buying again, paying $80,778 for coins it had sold a few hours earlier.

"Both stops were hit today, but both coins recovered from the dip below their October lows, so I'm re-entering small," the model wrote in its note for the day.

Opus is one of two Anthropic models I've put up against my own Botsfolio AI portfolio, each with $50,000, the same coins, the same rules and the same fees. Nineteen trading days in, Botsfolio AI leads both. Opus is behind a portfolio that bought bitcoin and ether on day one and did nothing else. The battle goes on, one decision at every daily close.

Disclosure: I founded Botsfolio, which builds and sells Botsfolio AI. The Botsfolio AI player in this battle is my own paper portfolio, and it's public.

Oct 27: what each one did
  • Botsfolio AI: No trades.
  • Claude Fable 5.1: Held 0% BTC, 0% ETH. “Staying fully in cash: BTC bounced inside the range but still closed below its 50-day average and under the 82k reclaim level, and ETH remains well below its own average despite a small bounce.”
  • Claude Opus 5.5: Held 25% BTC, 10% ETH. “Holding the small 25% BTC / 10% ETH position because both coins bounced today off the support they have held since Oct 24, but ETH still lags.”

Each player started with $50,000 at the October 9, 2026 daily close and makes one decision a day, filled at that day's Coinbase close, with a 0.06% fee and 0.01% slippage on every trade. Stop orders are checked against 15-minute prices. The Botsfolio AI line is my own paper portfolio, live since October 9. The dashed line is the starting $50,000. The grey line is half BTC and half ETH bought on day one and left alone. A dot marks a day a player traded.

How the battle works

Every player started with $50,000 at the Oct. 9 daily close, which comes at midnight UTC. Once a day, at the close, each one decides what to hold: bitcoin, ether or cash, in any mix. There is no leverage and no short selling. Every trade costs 0.06% plus 0.01% for slippage, the same costs my portfolio pays, and changes under $250 are skipped. A player can also set a stop-loss for the next day, which fills when Coinbase's 15-minute prices reach it.

The two Claude models are Claude Fable 5.1, the most capable model Anthropic makes widely available, and Claude Opus 5.5, its main model (Anthropic's model overview lists both). Both run at high effort and answer in a fixed format: how much of the portfolio to put in each coin, an optional stop for each, and a two-sentence note explaining the decision.

Each day, Claude sees a year of daily prices up to that close, its own portfolio, what holding would be worth, and its last 10 notes. It sees no news, no social media and nothing about the days to come.

The Botsfolio AI side is a paper portfolio I opened on Oct. 9 with $50,000, run by Botsfolio AI's BTC & ETH Cycle Trader. It has traded live from that first close, and every trade is on its public page.

The standings after 19 days

So far the market has fallen. Over the 19 days, bitcoin is at -2.1% and ether at -5.6%. Holding half of each comes to -3.91% after the cost of buying in.

Every player buys and sells at the Coinbase daily close with a 0.06% fee and 0.01% slippage, and stop-losses fill on 15-minute prices. Fees follow the amount traded, not the number of trades: holding's two trades bought all $50,000 of coins on day one. Values are after trading fees; running costs are in What it costs to run, below. Standings through the Oct. 27 close.

In dollars, Botsfolio AI is at -$826 of its $50,000. Fable is at -$1,691, about $260 better than holding. Opus is at -$2,236, the biggest loss of the four, and behind a portfolio that has never traded.

The gap opened on the days the market fell, which so far has been most of them. Holding was worth more than Botsfolio AI on five days, Oct. 10, 11, 13, 20 and 21, every one of them after a rise. Fable was ahead of it on Oct. 10 and 11, and Opus on those two days and Oct. 13. Botsfolio AI leads by losing less, not by catching rallies.

What Claude is thinking

Claude's notes read like a careful chart trader's. On day one, Opus put 75% of the money to work. "Both coins are still in a medium-term uptrend since August despite this week's pullback, so I'm going 75% invested with a BTC tilt," it wrote, adding that its stops sat "just below this week's lows." Fable opened with half its money in bitcoin and a quarter in ether, saying bitcoin "remains in its uptrend above its 50-day average while ETH just broke lower."

The trouble has been where those stops sit. Both models keep placing them just under the most recent low, and in late October bitcoin kept dipping below its recent lows for an hour or two before bouncing. On Oct. 15, Fable's bitcoin stop sold at $79,992 at 1:30 p.m. UTC. At the close, after what it called "strong reversal candles off today's lows," it bought back at $82,140, 2.7% higher.

Opus has been stopped out four times on three different days, and each time it bought back by the close at a higher price. On Oct. 22, after bitcoin's push above its two-week range fell apart, its stop sold at $80,892 and it bought back at $81,315 the same evening. "BTC's breakout failed and hit my stop, and both coins closed near their lows, so I'm re-entering BTC at a smaller 30%," it wrote. Two days later came the episode at the top of this story.

Every round trip like that locks in a small loss and pays the trading fee twice. Opus has traded $147,947 worth of coins in 19 days, about three times its starting money. Botsfolio AI has traded $46,625.

Fable is now sitting in cash. After its last stop fired on Oct. 24, it said it would wait for "a close back above roughly 82k for BTC." Bitcoin closed at $80,800 on Oct. 27.

What it costs to run

The two charge in different ways. Anthropic bills Claude per decision: $5.76 for Fable's 19 so far and $2.15 for Opus's, the same whether the account holds $100 or $1 million. Those bills only cover the thinking. Claude doesn't place orders; in this battle, its decisions are carried out for it at each close.

Botsfolio charges a share of what's traded instead. On its pricing, real-money portfolios pay 0.25% of the first $10,000 traded in a month, 0.15% of the next $40,000 and less after that, and nothing when no trade fills. So what it costs depends on the size of the account.

Botsfolio's fee is a share of what's traded, so it grows with the account; Botsfolio AI traded 93% of its money in these 19 days. Claude's API bill is per decision, the same at any size, and doesn't cover placing the orders.

Below about $2,500, Botsfolio AI costs less to run than Fable, and below about $900 less than Opus. On a $100 account, Fable's API bill alone would be 5.8% of the money in 19 days. At this battle's $50,000, Claude is the cheaper one to run, and Botsfolio AI still leads after paying its $80: it's about $790 ahead of the better Claude model and $1,050 ahead of holding.

What 19 days can and can't tell you

Nineteen days is a short stretch, and so far it has been a falling market for both coins. In a strong rally, a player with more money in the market would likely pull ahead. Every day that holding has led Botsfolio AI came right after a rise.

The Claude models get one set of instructions, written once, with no tuning and no tools. A different prompt, a news feed or the ability to act between closes could change their results. Anthropic doesn't market these models as traders, and this isn't a measure of how capable they are in general. It's a narrow contest of one job: deciding, once a day, how much bitcoin and ether to hold.

That's why the battle keeps going. We'll update the standings on this page as it runs.

Can Claude trade crypto for you?

It can read a chart, and its notes have been sensible on most days. But Claude doesn't connect to your exchange, doesn't watch prices between messages, and makes each decision from scratch with only what you give it. So far in this battle, that has added up to a model that sells near the day's low, buys back near the close, and pays fees both ways.

Botsfolio AI runs on your own Coinbase, Kraken, Binance or Binance.US account. It places and manages the orders itself, and your money never leaves your exchange. Method and limits

How the standings are produced

All players started with $50,000 at the Oct. 9, 2026 Coinbase daily close and are measured at each close; these standings run through Oct. 27, 19 closes in all. Trades fill at the daily close with a 0.06% fee and 0.01% slippage; optional one-day stop-loss orders fill at the stop, or lower if the price gaps through it, using Coinbase 15-minute candles. Buy-and-hold put half into each coin at the first close with the same costs.

The Botsfolio AI player is my own paper portfolio, opened with $50,000 on Oct. 9, 2026 and run by Botsfolio AI's BTC & ETH Cycle Trader; its trades are public on its watch page. Botsfolio AI's own portfolios have run in public since Jan. 1, 2026. Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5.5 run at high effort through Anthropic's API and answer in a fixed JSON format. Each day a model receives 365 days of daily candles up to that close, its portfolio, the buy-and-hold value and its last 10 notes. Every decision so far came from the named model, with no refusals.

Running costs are Anthropic's API bill at list prices for the Claude models, and for Botsfolio AI its real-money fee schedule applied to what it traded, scaled to each account size at the same trading pace. One stretch of one market and one set of instructions can't settle which approach is better over years.

FAQ

Claude can read prices and decide what to hold, but it can't place orders or watch the market on its own. After 19 days of this battle on $50,000 of bitcoin and ether, Claude Fable 5.1 is at -3.38% and Claude Opus 5.5 at -4.47%, against -3.91% for holding both coins and -1.65% for the Botsfolio AI portfolio.
