How Much Does It Cost to Let AI Trade Crypto? The Math From $500 to $50K
Letting AI trade crypto has three costs: the bot, your exchange's trading fees, and the spread on each order. Subscription bots charge $29 to $140 a month whether they trade or not, which on a $1,000 account is 35% to 60% of the money every year. Botsfolio has no subscription: you pay a small fee only when a trade fills, about $1.50 in a typical month at $1,000 and about $15 at $10,000 by our calculator. Exchange fees come on top and vary from 0% to 0.90% per trade, so where you trade matters as much as the bot.
"How much does a trading bot cost?" sounds like a simple question. The sticker price is easy to find. The real cost depends on how much you trade with, how often the bot trades, and which exchange it trades on. Here is the full math.
The three costs of letting AI trade
- The bot itself. A monthly subscription, a share of profits, or a fee per trade.
- Your exchange's trading fee. Charged on every buy and sell, from 0% to 0.90% depending on the exchange and your volume.
- The spread and slippage. The gap between the price you see and the price you get. Small on BTC and ETH, bigger on thin coins and large orders.
Most comparisons only talk about the first. On small accounts the first can be the biggest, and on any account the second can decide whether the bot beats simply holding.
Subscription vs pay per trade
Subscription bots charge the same every month. On a big account that is a small share. On a small one it eats the money:
At $1,000, a $29 a month plan costs $348 a year, 34.8% of the account. A $50 plan costs $600, or 60%. The bot would have to make more than that before you see a dollar. At $50,000 the same $50 plan is 1.2% a year, which is why subscriptions suit large accounts and hurt small ones.
What Botsfolio costs at each account size
There is no subscription. You add credit from $1, and each time a trade fills, a small fee comes out of it. The fee is a small share of what the trade was worth. Here is what that comes to, live from our pricing calculator:
| Amount the AI trades | Quiet month | Typical month | Busy month | Typical year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $500 | $0.22 | $0.76 | $1.16 | $9.12 (1.8%) |
| $1,000 | $0.44 | $1.52 | $2.32 | $18.24 (1.8%) |
| $5,000 | $2.20 | $7.59 | $11.61 | $91.08 (1.8%) |
| $10,000 | $4.40 | $15.18 | $23.22 | $182 (1.8%) |
| $50,000 | $22.00 | $55.52 | $79.65 | $666 (1.3%) |
A few things that keep it predictable:
- You pay only for fills. A cancelled order costs nothing, and stopping a portfolio sells nothing, so there is no exit fee.
- Paper trading is free. Run the AI on paper money as long as you like.
- Small top-ups have a small card fee. Adding less than $10 of credit adds a $0.30 processing fee. From $10, there is none.
- Running out of credit is safe. New buys wait until you add more, but sells and stop orders keep running.
Exchange fees: the cost most people forget
Every trade the AI places also pays your exchange's fee. These are the four exchanges Botsfolio AI can trade on:
| Exchange | How you connect | Trading fee (maker / taker) | Smallest order | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | Sign in with Coinbase. No keys to copy. | US: 0.50% / 0.90% at entry, lower with volume. EU, UK, Canada: 0.25% / 0.50%. Most other countries: 0.09% / 0.10%. | $1 | Most countries. Trades in USD in the US, USDC elsewhere. |
| Kraken | API key that can trade, with withdrawals off. | 0.40% / 0.80% at entry, lower with 30-day volume or assets held. | $5 | Not in India and a few other countries; in the US, not Maine or New York. |
| Binance | API key that can trade, with withdrawals off. | 0.10% / 0.10% (25% less when paid in BNB). | $5 | Not in the US, Canada, the Netherlands, the UK, Singapore or Japan. |
| Binance.US | API key that can trade, with withdrawals off. | 0% / 0.02%. | $10 | US only, and not every state. |
The gap is large. A trade on Binance.US can cost nothing, while the same trade at Coinbase's US entry tier costs 0.50% to 0.90%. Over a year of trading that difference adds up to several percentage points of return. We measured exactly how much in exchange fees can turn a winning AI into a losing one.
Two things lower the bill: maker orders (limit orders that wait in the book) are cheaper than taker orders on most exchanges, and fees drop as your 30-day volume rises. Botsfolio reads your account's own fee when you connect, uses limit orders where they save money, and is tuned for the fees on your exchange.
Each exchange has a smallest order it accepts: $1 on Coinbase, $5 on Kraken and Binance, $10 on Binance.US. The app works out the minimum for the cryptos you pick on your exchange and shows it before you start. Paper money starts at $50 per crypto.
Are AI trading bots ever free?
"Free" bots usually earn somewhere else. Exchange-built bots, for example, are free to switch on and earn from the trading fees on every order; Pionex charges 0.05% per trade. Some platforms take a share of profits instead. None of that is bad, but it is not free.
On Botsfolio, paper trading is free with no limit on time. Real money costs only the per-trade fee, and you can watch the AI's own portfolios trade live in public before you spend anything.
