Paper Trading vs Real Money: Are You Ready to Go Live?

In short

Paper trading tells you whether a strategy works on live prices. It doesn't tell you about fees you didn't model, orders that don't fill, minimum order sizes, or how it feels to watch real money fall. A strategy or an AI is ready for real money when it has enough trades to mean something, a forward record that includes a falling market, results that beat or fall much less than simply holding, a worst drop you could sit through, and the fees of your own exchange built in. Then start small and compare the real fills with the paper record before adding more.

"Am I ready to go live?" is one of the most argued threads in trading forums, and the answers range from "after 30 days" to "never." The honest answer is a set of checks, not a number of days. Here they are, with what changes the moment real money starts.

What paper trading gets wrong

Paper trading runs on real prices, so it is far better than a backtest. But it flatters you in predictable ways:

On paperWith real money
Orders fill instantly at the price you seeMarket orders pay the spread; limit orders may not fill at all
Fees are whatever you typed in, or zeroYour exchange's real fee on every trade, 0% to 0.90% depending on the exchange and tier
Any order size worksEach exchange has a smallest order, from $1 to $10
Big orders move nothingThin coins can fill well below the price you saw
A 20% drop is a numberA 20% drop is money, and people sell at the bottom

Botsfolio's paper trading charges a fee on every trade, and when you trade real money the app reads your exchange account's own fee. That closes the biggest gap, but not the others. For the full list of ways paper results mislead, see why paper trading results lie.

The readiness checklist

These are the checks we use before an AI trades real money. They work just as well for your own strategy:

Ready for real money when all of these are true
  • Enough trades to mean something. Under 20 closed trades, a result is mostly luck. A hundred or more is far more trustworthy.
  • A forward record, not only a backtest. Weeks of trading on prices the strategy never saw.
  • A falling market inside the record. Anything works in a rally. See how it behaved when prices dropped.
  • It beats holding the same coins, or falls much less. Otherwise holding is simpler and cheaper.
  • A worst drop you could sit through. Check it in money: 30% of your amount is how much?
  • Your exchange's fees are built in. A strategy that works at 0.10% can fail at 0.90%.
  • You know what stop and disconnect do. Before you need them.

What a record that passes looks like

Botsfolio AI's own portfolios are a working example. They trade on live prices in public, each one next to holding the same coins:

All 7 portfolios are ahead of holding the same coins, and every one fell less than holding did at its worst.

Botsfolio AI paper trades each portfolio on live prices from Jan 1, 2026, with a 0.10% fee on every trade. "Hold" is the same money kept in the same coins with no trading. Biggest drop is the largest fall from a high in daily value. Updated daily, last close Oct 14, 2026. How the portfolios are tested.

And because one year can be lucky, the same AI portfolio was tested from every monthly start since 2018, including the 2018 and 2022 crashes:

Going live: start small, then compare

When the checklist passes, the step to real money is easier in pieces:

  1. Start with an amount you'd be fine losing. The minimum the app shows for your cryptos and exchange is a fine place to begin.
  2. Run it for a few weeks. Long enough for a dozen or more trades.
  3. Compare the real fills with the paper record. Fees, fill prices and any orders that didn't fill.
  4. Add money in steps if the real results track the paper ones.

On Botsfolio the same AI runs your paper and real-money portfolios, so you can run both side by side. You pay only when a real trade fills, and paper stays free.

How long should you paper trade?

There is no magic number of days. What matters is the number of trades and whether the record includes a falling market. Our guide to how long to paper trade before going live goes through the math.

FAQ

It uses real prices, but it usually skips fees, fills every order instantly, ignores minimum order sizes and has no emotional cost. Real results are typically a little worse, and much worse if fees were left out.
