Can AI Trade Crypto for You? What It Decides, What You Decide, and Its Record

In short

Yes. An AI can trade crypto for you on your own exchange account, with real money or with paper money first. On Botsfolio you pick the cryptos and the amount; the AI finds the best-tested strategy for them and places every buy, sell and stop order. The money never leaves your exchange, the connection can't withdraw it, and you can stop the AI at any time. Before you trust any AI with money, check its record. Botsfolio AI trades its own portfolios in public, and as of October 14, 2026 all seven were ahead of simply holding their coins this year.

"Can AI trade crypto for me?" used to be a question for developers. In 2026 it went mainstream: Robinhood launched agentic trading in May, starting with stocks, and Coinbase opened dedicated accounts for AI agents in June. Videos titled "I let AI trade for me" pull hundreds of thousands of views.

The short answer is yes. The useful answer is about what "AI" means in each case, who decides what, where your money sits, and whether the AI has a record worth trusting.

Yes, AI can trade crypto for you. Here is what that means

Three very different things get called "AI trading":

  • A chatbot you ask. You type "should I buy ETH?" and it answers. It sounds sure of itself, but it has no tested process and often no live prices. When six leading AI models were each given $10,000 of real money to trade crypto in late 2025, four of them lost money. More on that in can ChatGPT trade crypto.
  • A rules bot. Grid bots and dollar-cost averaging bots follow fixed rules someone set. Useful, but nothing learns or adapts.
  • An AI trading agent. It runs a strategy tested on years of data for the coins you chose, places the orders, manages the stops, and keeps a full record. This is what Botsfolio AI is.

The label tells you little. The record tells you a lot.

What you decide and what the AI decides

Handing over the trading does not mean handing over control. On Botsfolio the split looks like this:

You decideThe AI decidesYour exchange does
Which cryptos, how much money, which exchange, real or paper money, and when to stopThe best-tested strategy for your cryptos, when to buy and sell, how much, where the stop orders sit, and a risk check before every new positionHolds your money and coins, fills the orders, and lets you withdraw at any time

How it works on Botsfolio, step by step

  1. Pick your cryptos. Any of the coins on the list, or start from one of the portfolios Botsfolio AI already trades.
  2. The AI finds the best-tested strategy for them. It is tested on past prices from many start dates, with fees, and judged against simply holding the same coins.
  3. Choose real money or paper money. Paper money is free and runs on live prices, so you can watch first.
  4. For real money, connect your exchange. Coinbase connects by signing in. Kraken, Binance and Binance.US connect with an API key that can trade but can't withdraw; Botsfolio checks the key and refuses one that can withdraw. Then choose the amount.
  5. Review and start. You see the estimated monthly cost before you start, and you pay only when a trade fills, from credit you add from $1.

The full connection steps for each exchange are in how to connect your exchange safely.

Does it work? Check the record, not the pitch

Anyone can claim an AI makes money. The honest test is a record anyone can check: every trade visible, run forward on new prices, compared with holding the same coins, with the worst drop shown. Botsfolio AI trades seven portfolios that way, in public:

All 7 portfolios are ahead of holding the same coins, and every one fell less than holding did at its worst.

Botsfolio AI paper trades each portfolio on live prices from Jan 1, 2026, with a 0.10% fee on every trade. "Hold" is the same money kept in the same coins with no trading. A single year can be lucky. So the same AI portfolio was also tested from every monthly start date since 2018, through two crashes and two recoveries:

It does not win every stretch. In fast rallies, holding often climbs faster, as it did in August 2026. What the record shows is smaller drops and a better worst case. The full year is broken down in buy and hold vs an AI-managed crypto portfolio, and you can watch every trade live.

Paper record, real money option

Botsfolio AI's own showcase portfolios trade with paper money on live prices, so anyone can follow them without risk. Your account can run the same AI with real money on your exchange.

Where your money sits, and how to stop the AI

Your money stays in your own exchange account the whole time. Botsfolio never holds it, and the connection has no permission to withdraw it. Here is what each control does:

When youWhat happens
Stop the portfolioThe AI stops trading and cancels its open orders, stop orders included, within about a minute. Nothing is sold, so there is no exit fee. The coins stay in your account, yours to keep or sell, with no stop order under them.
Disconnect the exchangeBotsfolio first cancels its open orders on the exchange, then removes your keys or sign-in and stops the portfolios on that exchange. Anything the exchange won't cancel is listed so you can cancel it there.
Credit runs outNew buys wait until you add credit. Sells and stop orders always run, so a falling coin is never left without its stop.
Withdraw your moneyAny time, on your exchange. Botsfolio never holds the money you trade and has no permission to withdraw it.

The details, including what happens when you run out of credit, are in what happens when you stop or disconnect.

What it costs

Paper trading is free. With real money there is no subscription: you add credit from $1 and pay a small fee only when a trade fills. At $1,000 that comes to about $1.50 in a typical month by our calculator, plus your exchange's own fees. The full math, compared with subscription bots, is in how much it costs to let AI trade crypto, and on the pricing page.

Before you let any AI trade your money

Whatever product you look at, Robinhood, Coinbase or anything else, the same checks apply:

Eight checks before an AI touches real money
  • Every trade is public. Buys, sells and stops with dates and prices, not a monthly percentage or a screenshot.
  • It ran forward on new prices. A backtest alone can be tuned until it looks perfect.
  • It is compared with holding the same coins. If holding did better, the trading added risk for nothing.
  • The worst drop is shown. Returns without the drop are half the story.
  • The money stays in your own exchange account. Never send money to a bot platform's wallet.
  • The connection can't withdraw. Sign-in or a trade-only key, nothing more.
  • You can stop it any time. And you know what stopping does to open orders.
  • The cost is clear before you start. Including the exchange's fees.

If a product promises guaranteed or very high returns, walk away. The US CFTC's advisory says it plainly: AI won't turn trading bots into money machines. More on that in are AI trading bots legit.
